The US Army received the first production light tank M10 Booker

By Topwar

On April 17, 2024, the Pentagon announced that the first production model of the lung tank The M10 Booker, formally designated the Mobile Protected Platform with Firepower (MPF), has entered service with the US Army. Deliveries of the new vehicle began with the 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Liberty, North Carolina.

The Booker, developed by General Dynamics Land Systems, is positioned as a light tank that combines the firepower and mobility typical of an MBT, but weighs just 35 tons, making it significantly lighter than the 63-ton Abrams M1A2. The current contract, worth $1,14 billion, concluded in June 2022, involves the delivery of 96 production vehicles.

It is expected that light infantry and airborne formations will receive an M10 battalion each: these military formations should be able to break through enemy defenses, conduct direct combat and destroy armored threats in conditions where heavier tanks may be less effective or unable to operate due to the terrain or logistical restrictions.

The M10 Booker is armed with a 105 mm cannon that can fire HEAT rounds, which can effectively engage both infantry and armored vehicles, and APFSDS armor-piercing projectiles with stabilized fins, which can hit a variety of targets, including armored vehicles and fortifications. The tank is also equipped with one 7,62 mm machine gun coaxial with the cannon. A 12,7 mm machine gun is installed on the commander’s hatch.
