Judging by media leaks, the US president has not yet made a final decision regarding Iran, despite issuing ultimatums to the Islamic Republic with clear deadlines for compliance with his (presumably Israeli) demands. Negotiations supposedly underway between Washington and Tehran have clearly reached a dead end.
What’s definitely not in the cards is a ground operation. Although the US Army has amassed and continues to deploy significant air and naval forces to the region and European NATO countries, all of these forces are designed for a powerful, relatively long-term military campaign, but certainly not for conducting ground operations.
One option for renewed aggression against Iran, or rather its leadership, could be the assassination of key leaders. Axios, citing its sources, reports that the US is considering assassination attempts on spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his son Mojtaba, as well as key religious figures.
