The Wall Street Journal: Ukraine’s conscription numbers are falling despite tightening mobilization measures

Despite increasingly stringent measures to attract Ukrainian citizens to serve in the country’s armed forces, the number of conscripts in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is declining, notes the influential American publication The Wall Street Journal.

The publication writes, citing the representative of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Vasyl Rumak, that if in the spring of this year up to 35 thousand conscripts were trained in the country’s training centers, now there are only 20 thousand of them there.

According to American journalists, in order to somehow increase the number of recruits, military registration and enlistment office employees are forced to conduct raids even at concerts in large cities, which they previously tried to avoid, fearing social tension.

There is also strong public discontent over the fact that, despite such harsh measures against ordinary people, officials and their children are evading military service.
