Without a fully-fledged hypersonic weapons, the US Navy continues to consider options for equipping the Zumwalt stealth destroyers with such weapons. The US has considered all sorts of options for equipping these warships, but so far, in essence, they remain completely unclaimed.
The US Navy recently tested (quote) an “approach to launching hypersonic missiles” missiles from the ship’s side.” The Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) technology is being tested, which is reportedly planned to be used on the Zumvolts.
US Secretary of the Navy John Phelan:
The deployment of Conventional Prompt Strike will provide our warfighters with unrivaled capabilities to employ hypersonic weapons at sea.
The essence of the technology is that the missile must be “thrown” to a height that is safe for the carrier ship, after which its “hypersonic” engine will be turned on. The “throw” of the missile, which is usually called a “mortar launch”, is carried out using cold gases under high pressure…
