Continued. Part one: The Death of the Titan
In February 2018, at a conference on underwater exploration, prominent industry figures expressed growing concern about OceanGate’s practices and planned work. Many specialists, including a Russian expert with extensive experience diving the Titanic wreck, expressed alarm over the risks associated with OceanGate’s activities. Conference participants discussed the dangers of deep-sea exploration at the Titanic wreck site, particularly OceanGate’s seemingly careless approach, which does not meet industry standards for such risky deep-sea diving.
On May 29, 2019, during an inspection of the Titan prior to its next dive, a crack was discovered in the carbon fiber portion of the pressure hull that extended approximately four feet longitudinally and spanned about a third of the hull transversely.
