TORRINGTON – The Board of Education’s proposed $81.56 million budget for 2023-24 would require nearly a 2-mill tax increase, Mayor Elinor C. Carbone said Tuesday during a joint meeting of Board of Finance and school board.
Superintendent Susan M. Lubomski presented the package, which would boost spending by $3.43 million, or 4.3%, compared to the current $78.13 million budget.
“You can see where this board is going to have tough decisions to make,” Carbone said.
A 2-mill increase would add $400 per year to residents’ tax bills. The current tax rate is 47.14 mills. One mill equals $1 of tax for every $1,000 of assessed property value.
The education proposal includes a $552,304 wish list of new hires: $58,697 for a high school Spanish teacher; $58,697 for an alternative-education teacher at the middle school; $75,000 for a social worker at the high school; $176,091 for three new physical-education teachers; $41,019 for a school security associate at the middle school; and $142,800 for an IT and innovation director.
