HONOLULU – A tsunami triggered by a historic underwater earthquake off the east coast of Russia began washing ashore in Hawaii on Tuesday evening, expected to send powerful walls of water into the island chain after thousands had been urged to evacuate to higher ground.
Already Haleiwa and Kahului measured a tsunami at 4-foot wave amplitude, with a 3-foot wave amplitude at Hanalei
“Everything’s been okay so far,” Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said after the first hour had elapsed since the initial waves reached the northwestern islands. “We haven’t seen a big wave.”
