From now on, the Royal Navy will simply be the RN, and the Type 26 will be the humble T26.
First, a few facts from Wiki about where and when it started story these ships.
Back in 1998, the Ministry of Defense began thinking about what would replace the Duke or Type 23 frigates when their time came. And this despite the fact that the construction and operation of the 23s were in full swing at that time. They were built from 1987 to 2005, and 16 of them were made. These were ships with dimensions of 133×16 m, a draft of 7.3 m, a crew of 185 people, a maximum speed of 28 knots and a displacement of 4900 tons. Their main purpose was to perform anti-submarine warfare missions, although during operation and modernization they turned into multi-purpose ships. One of them managed to shoot down two Houthi UAVs in 2024. At the moment, 8 units remain in service, and three more serve in the Chilean navy. So the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Navy got busy and in 1998 launched a research programme called Future Surface Combatant. In 2010, the name disappeared somewhere, but at the same time, BAE Systems Maritime received 127 million of the country’s money to develop a new type of ship called the Global Combat Ship….
