United Nations forced to shut down Europe HQ to save money as electricity bills skyrocket

Officials from the UN Office in Geneva (UNOG) have said electricity bills have increased by more than 300 percent over the last three years.

The United Nations has been forced to shutter its European HQ due to electricity costs, with bills proving almost insurmountable for the international organisation.

The Palais des Nations in Geneva will remain closed for the next week, until January 12, due to an ongoing liquidity crisis that has sparked a drive from officials to save money.

The building was built between 1929 and 1936 and has served as Europe’s UN HQ since 1966.

But chiefs decided to shut the location on December 20, 2023, to save money on heating, electricity and maintenance.
