Argentina, a nation long plagued by economic instability and rampant inflation, has recently embarked on a controversial path: adopting the United States dollar as its official currency.

Both the United States Republicans and the newly elected Argentina President Javier Milei have made recent comments suggesting they are in favor of eliminating government agencies dedicated to women’s rights. On November 17, 2023, during budget talks, the United States Republicans suggested the government eliminate the Department of Labor Women’s Bureau. This proposal was met with criticism from Democrats and women’s rights groups, who argued that the bureau provides important services to women in the workforce.

Similarly, on November 20, 2023, during his election parade of excitement, Argentina President Javier Milei suggested he is going to eliminate the Argentina Ministry of Women, Gender & Diversity. This proposal was also met with criticism from Argentines, who argued that the ministry is important for promoting women’s rights and gender equality.

The timing of these two proposals is noteworthy, given that the United States and Argentina are currently in the process of discussing a potential currency union. This raises the possibility that the two countries are coordinating their efforts to roll back women’s rights. If this is the case, it would be a major setback for women in both countries…
