Simian Virus 40
SV40 is a monkey virus which stands for “Simian Vacuolating Virus 40” and was found to have contaminated some of the cells that the virus was grown in, specifically kidney cells derived from Asian rhesus monkeys.
The polio vaccine administered from 1955–1963 was contaminated with this virus essentially exposing 100 million people. Most, but not all, of the contamination was in the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV). SV40 is a known oncogenic DNA virus which induces primary brain and bone cancers, malignant mesothelioma, and lymphomas in laboratory animals.
