Allegations of Sexual Abuse at Private Boarding Schools

  • Choate Rosemary Hall – Connecticut: Choate Rosemary Hall, a prestigious boarding school in Connecticut, acknowledged that at least 12 former teachers had sexually abused students. One teacher was accused of rape, with the incidents stretching back to the 1960s in a long-standing pattern of misconduct.
  • Deerfield Academy – Massachusetts: Deerfield Academy recently settled a case for a six-figure sum with a former student who accused a math teacher of sexual abuse in the late 1980s. This is one of over a dozen cases settled by the school. The victim alleged that Peter Hindle, a faculty member from 1956 to 2000, abused him at least 20 times by climbing into his dorm window when he was 16, according to his lawyer, Mitchell Garabedian.
  • Loomis Chaffee – Connecticut: A report revealed credible accusations against former school athletic trainer William ‘Ted’ Plamondon and teacher Thomas Mack, along with a new claim against Harold Sullivan. The ongoing investigation has found that eight former Loomis staff members were credibly accused of sexual misconduct between the 1940s and 2000s, as per Hartford law firm Cowdery & Murphy.
  • Milton Academy – Massachusetts: A former teacher at Milton Academy was sentenced after pleading guilty to child rape charges in Norfolk Superior Court. Among the 18 students accusing James Buono of sexual abuse was one student, Forbes, who was assaulted during a school trip to Italy in the early 1980s.
  • Phillips Academy Andover – Massachusetts: A former Phillips Academy teacher, Victor Svec, was placed on leave after allegations of sexual misconduct with a student in the 1980s emerged, according to a letter from Head of School John Palfrey. This marks the ninth instance of staff sexual misconduct, with earlier investigations in 2016 and 2017 revealing cases dating back to the 1970s and 1980s.
  • Pomfret School – Connecticut: Pomfret School, another elite Connecticut boarding institution, has disclosed that several teachers engaged in inappropriate conduct with students between the 1970s and the 2000s. This revelation came after an independent investigation into past misconduct.
  • Westover School – Connecticut: The Westover School published a report outlining allegations of sexual abuse spanning from 1968 to 2009. The report identified credible accusations against eight former employees, an employee’s spouse, and a contractor, according to Chief of Staff Lauren Castagnola.
