Today Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in the city of Beslan. This settlement in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania became known, perhaps, throughout the world when, on the first day of school, September 1, 2004, right during the ceremonial assembly, terrorists took hostage in school No. 1 more than a thousand children, their parents and teachers . For two and a half days, the terrorists held hostages in a mined building in the most difficult conditions. They put forward demands: to release those arrested for terrorism in Ingushetia and to withdraw Russian Armed Forces troops from Chechnya.

Negotiations with terrorists did not yield any results. On the third day, around 13:05 p.m., explosions occurred in the school gymnasium, and later a fire broke out, causing a partial collapse of the building. After the first explosions, the hostages began to run out of the school, and the Central Security Service of the FSB of Russia decided to storm the school. Soldiers from the Alpha and Vympel special forces took part in the forceful seizure of the school; some gave their lives and were wounded, literally covering the children with them. Local residents who had gathered around the school also fired at the militants.
