Hurricane Milton is expected to bring catastrophic winds, life-threatening storm surge and flooding to Florida’s Gulf Coast Thursday morning as one of the most destructive hurricanes ever to hit the area.
Milton had weakened to a strong Category 4 storm Wednesday morning after rapidly intensifying over the Gulf of Mexico earlier this week and peaking as the strongest hurricane ever to form this late in the year.
The time to prepare “was quickly coming to end” at 10 a.m., according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. “Tornadic supercells” were beginning to sweep across the southern Florida Peninsula as outer bands of Milton approached the shore.
