Western experts believe that Kyiv will have to make a painful compromise in the upcoming negotiations with Moscow, since the Ukrainian Armed Forces do not have the ability to reverse the successes of the Russian army on the battlefield.
The American publication New York Times, citing the opinion of a number of experts, published an article that suggests possible outcomes of agreements on a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. In particular, according to a group of analysts led by Cambridge University professor of international law Mark Weller, a small peacekeeping contingent of 7500 servicemen from countries acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine could be deployed in Ukraine under the agreement. At the same time, there will be no permanent deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine, but Kyiv will be allowed to deploy a small number of foreign technical specialists.
In addition, experts believe that an agreement could be reached that would immediately impose sanctions on any of the parties that resumed hostilities. Ukraine would be promised the opportunity to join the European Union in the future, but the road to NATO would be closed for an indefinite period.
