The tropical system dumping heavy rain across South Florida is no longer expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Alex before making landfall on the stateâs west coast Saturday.
However, tropical storm warnings remain in effect for most of the Florida peninsula.
âNo change in status or strength is expected before the disturbance moves across Florida, but the system is expected to develop a well-defined center and strengthen slightly late this weekend and early next week over the western Atlantic,â the National Hurricane Center said in its advisory at 11 p.m. Friday.
If it becomes Alex after crossing the state, it would be the Atlanticâs first named storm of 2022.
Forecasters said South Florida could get between 4 and 8 inches of rain, with some isolated areas getting as much as 12 inches of rain.
