FIRES ARE continuing to rage in the Amazon rainforest, sparking global concern for the “lungs of the planet”. Here is the latest news on the fires.
World leaders have urged Brazil to take action against the fires blazing through the Amazon rainforest. French President Emmanuel Macron has said the record number of fires in the Amazon rainforest is an “international crisis”, and at the Group of 7 meeting this weekend pledged funds to help stem the blazes and reforest damaged areas. Brazil has had more than 72,000 fires this year – an 84 percent increase on the same period in 2018 according to the country’s National Institute for Space Research.
More than half of those fires were in the Amazon, which is a vital carbon store that slows down the pace of global warming. World leaders are applying pressure to Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, who has said his country does not have the resources to tackle the flames.
