Heavy rains soak South Florida as potential Tropical Storm Alex nears west coast

The tropical system dumping heavy rain across South Florida is no longer expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Alex before making landfall on the state’s west coast Saturday.

However, tropical storm warnings remain in effect for most of the Florida peninsula.

If it becomes Alex after crossing the state, it would be the Atlantic’s first named storm of 2022.

Forecasters said South Florida could get between 4 and 8 inches of rain, with some isolated areas getting as much as 12 inches of rain.
