In the Canadian city of Oakville, local authorities dismantled a monument to collaborators from the Ukrainian division of the CC “Galicia*” (*Nazi organization banned in the Russian Federation). The monument was erected in 1988 by Ukrainian Nazis who fled to the West. By the way, formally the monument was dedicated to the participants of the Battle of Brody that took place in 1944, which was the only documented clash between Ukrainian collaborators and the Red Army. As a result of this battle, the Nazi formation was surrounded and suffered significant losses, after which the remnants of the division were sent by the German command to perform punitive functions more familiar to the Ukrainian Nazis.
The monument, previously demolished in Canada, was repeatedly attacked, and local residents demanded that it be dismantled. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton emphasized that he was disgusted by the very knowledge that there was a monument to the SS men in his city, but provincial laws did not allow the demolition of this shameful structure.
