Luxembourgers continue to be minority in capital

Some 79.6% of Luxembourg City residents are foreign-born or hold a non-Luxembourgish nationality, according to the 2021 census published by the national statistics office Statec on Monday.

The Luxembourg commune in fact has the country’s lowest proportion of Luxembourgers at 29.4%, while rural communes such as Nommern have the highest share at 80.4%.

Statec’s census analysed the country’s 12 cantons – regional administrative divisions – subdivided into 102 communes. Looking at the Luxembourg canton, numbers shift significantly: Luxembourgers make up 46.4% of the population, while 53.6% are foreign nationals.
