Against the backdrop of a wave of pogroms that swept France, the gendarmerie introduced armored vehicles into the streets of cities, among which new samples were noticed.
Created in 1933, the Armored Group of Mobile Gendarmerie (GBGM) is a unit equipped with armored vehicles. Based near Paris, it serves as a government back-up in case of crisis situations when traditional law enforcement measures are insufficient and military intervention is excessive.
As stated in the publication Army Recognition, the GBGM units have recently been equipped with the new Centaure technology.
In 2021, SOPHRAME, part of the Lohr Group, won a contract to supply the French gendarmerie with 90 new Centaure 4×4 armored vehicles, which should gradually replace the wheeled VBRGs that have been in service since 1974.
