On Feb. 2, the  Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) released its annual report on the 10 worst U.S. colleges that stifle free speech, a project it has conducted since 2011. Some of the biggest names in higher education made the list this year, including Stanford University, Georgetown, and the University of North Carolina.
Yale University was âhonoredâ with the Lifetime Censorship Award by FIRE, whose mission, according to its website, is âto defend and sustain the individual rights of students and faculty members at Americaâs colleges and universities.â These rights include freedom of speech, freedom of association, due process, legal equality, religious liberty, and sanctity of conscience.
FIREâs 2022 âworst-of-the-worstâ list is âpresented in no particular order, and both public and private colleges are featured,â states the report.  âPublic colleges and universities are bound by the First Amendment. Private colleges on this list are not constitutionally required to respect student and faculty speech rights, but explicitly promise to do so.â
