It’s time for spring cleaning and that means digital clutter, too. The Better Business Bureau and the National Cyber Security Alliance are sending out the alert that this is crucial to do right now.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Back up your devices: Use the 3-2-1 Rule: Make sure there are three copies of your data stored on two different types of media and one is “off-site.” Here’s an example: save your documents in three different formats on an external hard drive and a cloud backup service.
  • Get rid of apps you don’t use: Make sure you’re not just hitting delete. That just takes it off your home screen. First, go into the app and make sure you delete your account to take all of your personal and financial information off of it. Then delete it from your phone.
  • Take passwords off of free password management apps: Those apps can easily be hacked or can be sold to third parties who could use your passwords for nefarious reasons. So make sure you’re using a legitimate password management app and you’re paying money to keep your information secure.
