Vaccinating against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) during pregnancy may increase the risk of pregnancy complications and lead to premature birth and infection, according to a new study published in JAMA Network Open.
Researchers investigated Pfizer’s Abrysvo RSV vaccine, the only RSV shot approved for pregnant women in the U.S. The vaccine is meant to protect infants through age 6 months against RSV.
According to the study, women who received the vaccine were 29% more likely to experience hypertensive disorders, including preeclampsia, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes and Low Platelets), a life-threatening pregnancy complication considered a variant of preeclampsia.
