United Airlines to ban travelers temporarily who refuse to wear masks from future flights

Those who refuse to wear a mask on United Airlines flights will soon face consequences.

The airline said in an internal memo on Monday that it would be stepping up its coronavirus prevention policy by temporarily banning travelers who don’t wear masks from flying with United. The affected customers may later be subject to a “comprehensive incident review,” according to CNN.

Flight attendants will first warn those on the plane to put on a mask and will offer one if the traveler doesn’t have a face covering. If the customer still refuses to wear the protective equipment, the attendant can file a report, which could result in the traveler being placed on an “internal travel restriction list.” Being placed on the list means the person will not be allowed to fly with United “for a duration of time to be determined.”

The new policy goes beyond the company’s current restrictions, which does not allow passengers without a mask to board and includes flight attendants “strongly encouraging” people to wear masks while on the flights.

There are some exceptions to the new policy, including for small children, people who have serious medical conditions that preclude them from wearing masks, and for those who are eating or drinking while on a United flight.

While most of the country continues to reopen from the coronavirus pandemic, some states have seen recent surges in infections. On Thursday, the governors of both Oregon and Utah announced pauses in their reopening plans because of growing numbers of infections.

Across the United States, there have been more than 2.1 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and at least 116,000 deaths.
