The Biden administration has designated Qatar as a Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA), with Colombia soon following, opening up new avenues of cooperation between the nations.
President Joe Biden confirmed Qatarâs MNNA status on March 10, fulfilling the promise he made to Qatarâs emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani at the White House in late January. âI think itâs long overdue,â Biden had said at the time. Qatar is the third Gulf region nation to become an MNNA.
According to the president, designating Qatar as an MNNA is targeted at reflecting the relationship between the two countries.
