WATCH: Twice-arrested cop assailant smashes bottle over NYPD officer’s head in unprovoked assault

Early Sunday morning, body camera footage captured a man, who was arrested twice for attacking police officers, assaulting a New York Police Department cop on a Brooklyn street corner by smashing a glass bottle over his head.

The 27-year-old suspect, who has previously been arrested for assaulting officers, was identified as Tyshaun Holloway of Hackensack, New Jersey.

The footage shows Holloway conversing with the officer for a moment at around 4:30 am Sunday before Holloway is seen smashing the bottle over the officer’s head and attempting to escape on foot. Officers were able to capture Holloway.

Due to body cam footage not recording audio, it is unclear what the two were talking about in the moment. The officer, who remains unidentified, received lacerations to the neck and head. According to a tweet from NYPD News, the injuries required stitches and staples, but the officer is okay.

Holloway was charged with assault, menacing, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and criminal possession of a weapon, according to Fox News. Holloway was arrested twice in 2016 for assaulting police officers, local authorities told Fox News. The New York City Police Benevolence Association, which represents officers in the city, slammed the broken justice system that allowed Holloway to walk free and be able to assault again.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea expressed his thanks that the officer was not seriously injured. “Another reminder of the grave dangers your cops face every day as they take to the streets to protect the people of NYC,” Shea tweeted.

This latest attack marks a concerning trend in New York City in 2021 of officers being attacked. According to police figures cited by Fox News, as of July 11, there have been 110 assaults on officers in the city, compared to 100 in the same timeframe last year. The National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) released recent alarming statistics regarding an uptick in ambush-style attacks on law enforcement members nationwide, a 91 percent increase.
