Winter Storm Elliott Live Updates: Over 112 Million People Under Weather Warnings

  • A powerful winter storm is moving across large swaths of the U.S., impacting road and air travel on what is expected to be one of the busiest holiday travel weekends of the year.
  • Weather experts say the storm, which has been dubbed Winter Storm Elliott, could turn into a bomb cyclone with blizzard conditions possible in the Midwest and Great Lakes areas.
  • A National Weather Service advisory said the storm could create “widespread disruptive and potentially crippling impacts” in the central and eastern parts of the country through Saturday, with “record-breaking” cold temperatures expected in the Great Plains and “significant freezing rain” a possibility in Oregon and Washington.
  • The storm is expected to impact most of the contiguous U.S. through the end of the weekend.
  • President Joe Biden received a briefing about the storm’s impact on the U.S. Thursday morning as airlines began canceling flights.
