China, France, the UK, the United States, and Russia issued a joint statement on Jan. 3, affirming that nuclear war and the proliferation of nuclear weapons ought to be avoided at all costs.
âWe affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,â the statement said.
âAs nuclear use would have far-reaching consequences, we also affirm that nuclear weaponsâfor as long as they continue to existâshould serve defensive purposes, deter aggression, and prevent war. We believe strongly that the further spread of such weapons must be prevented.â
