EU Passes Flagship Nature Restoration Law Amidst Protests, Allows For Massive Land Grabs And Heavy Restrictions On Farmers

The law provides for an emergency brake, as requested by Parliament, so targets for agricultural ecosystems can be suspended under exceptional circumstances if they severely reduce the land needed for sufficient food production for EU consumption.

Last week the European Union quietly passed a controversial landmark bill that establishes the EU’s necessity to “restore” the land and sea, which effectually grants member states more power to mitigate and sequester the lands. This comes during weeks and weeks after protests from farmers across Europe.

Known as the “EU nature restoration law,” the legislature passed with a vote of 329 votes in favor, 275 against, and 24 abstentions. The bill faced heavy opposition from the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest political consortium in the EU Parliament, which was able to get the bill to rescind some of its original stipulations. The EPP fought against all the additional governmental red tape and added procedures farmers would need to follow, which is one of the things the farmers protesting across the EU are demonstrating against.
