California storm leaves 2 dead, thousands without power

A New Year’s Eve storm that slammed California has killed at least two people and has left tens of thousands without power Sunday night, officials said.

The storm, caused by an atmospheric river of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, doused California with heavy rain and snow starting on Saturday, triggering flooding in Northern and Central California.

Officials said at least two people have died due to the storm — a driver found inside a vehicle submerged in floodwaters in Sacramento and a 72-year-old man killed by a fallen tree at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz.
