“And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication” (Revelation 17:1-2).
In Revelation 17, one of the seven angels directs the Apostle John’s attention toward the world’s historic spiritually illicit love affair with a demonic and diabolical harlot named “Babylon.” We learn about this woman, her harlotry and the beast with it’s seven heads and ten horns. Why does the woman ride the beast? And why does the beast destroy the woman? These are the subjects that beckon us to explore the mystery.
In the previous chapter expounded upon in the previous article of this Revelation series, seven vials of wrath are poured out upon the earth. Each vial targets those things necessary to sustain life. As the judgment of the sixth vial dries up the Euphrates River, armies are deployed … “into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon” (Revelation 16:16).
As the seventh vial is poured out, a voice from the heavenly throne is heard to say, “It is done” (Revelation 16:17). Immediately following those words, a world-wide earthquake begins to level mountains and swallow islands. At that point, God calls to mind his plan to judge the great harlot …
“And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath” (Revelation 16:19).
The earthquake divides the “great city” into three parts. The Greek terms for “great” μεγάλη and “city” πόλις combine to form the modern English word “megalopolis,” thus implying that the city is no mere metropolis, but rather, a combination of several cities. The “three parts” may be metaphoric of mankind’s three races – the offspring of Shem, Ham and Japeth, rather than a physical separation of landmasses. Just where this “great city” is located has become a matter of considerable speculation.
Is It Europe?
Today’s united Europe boasts of being the essence of Babylon. Just after the turn of the twentieth century, German archaeologists removed the Ishtar Gate from its sandy grave south of Baghdad and brought it back to Germany – every brick of it. Today, that famous gate of Babylon is on display in a museum in Berlin.
