Canada To Construct World’s First 2SLGBTQI+ National Monument In Ottawa

Construction has begun on a new national monument in the Canadian capital of Ottawa to honor the 2SLGTBQI+ community, which boasts to be the first in the world.

The project will cost $13 million (CAD) entrusted the LGBT Purge Fund that approved the design of the monument, which is basically a large cylinder with a bung of holes taken out of it. It’s called Thunderhead, and it’s being built by the Ottawa River by Portage Bridge and Wellington Street.

The group has been working on getting designs approved and funded since 2022, providing some mock-ups of what the final design should look like.

The central sculpture, reminiscent of a thunderhead cloud clad in mirrored tiles, now has larger openings and simplified forms. It continues to embody the strength, activism and hope of 2SLGBTQI+ communities.

The group says

The group got its name from a referred time period during the 1950s through the mid-1990s where thousands public officials and military members were harassed and expelled from their positions because they supported sodomy or were sodomites.

Michelle Douglas, executive director of the LGBT Purge Fund, who was honorably discharged from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1989, said in a statement:
