By Carly Roman

Three people were charged and are now in custody regarding the shootings in Virginia Beach, according to authorities.

Ahmon Adams, 22, Nyquez Baker, 18, and Devon Dorsey Jr., 20, were arrested, and each person was charged with seven counts of felony assault, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and reckless handling of a firearm, the Virginia Beach Police Department announced on Saturday. The identities of the two victims of Friday’s shootings were confirmed to be Deshayla Harris, 29, and Donovon Lynch, 25.

TWO DEAD AND EIGHT INJURED IN SHOOTINGS AT VIRGINIA BEACH

Adams, Baker, and Dorsey were allegedly involved with the first incident, but there was no indication that they were connected to the other two shootings, according to police.

The police department released its first update on the case Saturday afternoon in which authorities said preliminary reports suggest the shootings followed a physical altercation.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that a group of individuals were involved in some type of conflict that resulted in a physical fight. At some point during the physical altercation, several individuals produced firearms and began shooting at each other, resulting in numerous people being wounded,” the first update read.

The three separate shootings occurred in Virginia Beach on Friday night. Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate said that “numerous shots were fired” and approximately eight people were injured in an “original crime scene” at 20th Street and Atlantic Avenue after 11 p.m. during a press conference early Saturday morning.

“While officers were actively working that crime scene, we had additional shots that were fired” in the area of 20th Street and Pacific Avenue, Neudigate said at the time, adding that it led to the shooter being killed by a uniformed officer. Neudigate said a second person was also killed in a shooting incident, but he noted that police don’t believe it was associated with the original shooting or the “police intervention shooting.” He said an officer was struck by a car and then taken to a hospital. That officer was treated and released, according to the department’s initial update.

The police department’s second Saturday update said Harris was a bystander and did not mention whether Lynch was accused of discharging weapons. It added that enhanced police presence would be assigned to the oceanfront “to support ongoing public safety efforts” and that the department continues to investigate whether the three shootings were related and whether there are additional suspects who remain at large.

Adams, Baker, and Dorsey are being held in custody at Virginia Beach City Jail. A court date was not announced.
